Painted & Stenciled Small Tin 4-Car American Toy TRAIN SET Click images to enlarge Description ANTIQUE 4-CAR STENCILED TRAIN SET Wonderful antique painted and stenciled smaller scale four-car toy train set including a 4-1/4" long by 3-3/4" tall train engine; a 3" long by 2-1/4" tall train tender; and two 4-1/4" long by 2-1/2" tall passenger cars. All four cars retain their original wheels - the engine has a molded pull ring on the front with damaged hole on the back (a hook can still be threaded through the hole); the tender has a open front for loading with loop hook on both front and back; one car is pierced on both the front and back for inserting a hook; and the other car has a piercing hole on the front for hook and nothing on the back. Condition of the paint and stenciling is worn, worn, worn - rolled tin tops on the cars have some bending to the points, with a hint of a tilt to the smoke stack and separation on the engine green top along one underside edge - does not detract. All pieces have rubbing, scuffing, and wear to the finish reflecting play wear - obviously this was a favorite toy. I think a lot can be forgiven due to the rarity of this set - it is American in origin, late 19th century in era and so visually interesting - a similar set sold at Bonhams/Skinner Americana auction in 2013 for $1,300.
