Description

Original circa 1870's-1890's American or English eight bell Victorian holiday toy noise maker. A fine quality bell toy with a beautifully made turned wood handle extending into a turned wood top section. The handle shaft supports four pairs of bells (eight bells total). The bells are attached to four strips of muslin which are covered in simulated leather. When the handle is shook in a rotating manner the strips with the bells all rotate around & ring vigorously creating quite a festive feeling. The toy is complete & all of its components are entirely original in all respects. There have never been any touchups & there have never any repairs to the toy of any kind. The handle, which shows only very slight wear, retains 95% or more of the original thick black glossy finish. The finish on the handle was probably an attempt by the maker to simulate the look of ebony. But, we do not know what type of wood the handle is made of. The tin bells still have a good amount of their original nickel plating. But, the eight original bells also show areas of wear, oxidation, & some light surface corrosion here & there. The four thick original cloth straps show some wear so that some parts of the muslin here & there under the simulated leather covering are visible. The toy is 6 5/8 inches long and weighs 3.1 ounces. It measures 2 5/8 inches across at the widest point across the bells. In all our 55+ years of being interested in antique toys we have never seen another one like this.
